Full disclosure at the outset: the author mentioned a (now-expired) giveaway for the Kindle version of this short e-story in the Action Heroine Fans group that he and I both belong to on the reading-oriented social network Goodreads. Though I'd never read any of his work, I'd been curious about it; so I jumped at the chance to check it out for free. As my rating indicates, my interest was rewarded! I definitely plan to read more fiction by Billy Wong.

This is a simple, direct, fast-paced tale, written with a spare style that wastes no time or words, and that's free of profanity and sexual innuendo. (In style and substance, it probably has a lot in common with the boxing stories that were a staple of some of the old pulps --except that in that era, in life and in fiction, a female would never have been allowed to be a contender.) Though I'm not familiar with the mixed martial-arts competition milieu myself, it's obvious that the author is, and he brings it to life very well. His slam-bang action scenes are realistic and gripping. But the real strength of the story is the interaction between the two main characters (that is, the interaction that goes deeper than just hitting and kicking each other!). And without being in the least preachy, the story packs a great message. Who wins the fight? Well, to find out, you'll just have to read the story; I'm not giving away any hints here! :-)

This is a five-star short story, not a five star novel. The characters here aren't developed to the degree that they could be in a novel, nor does the story cover the amount of plot that a novel could. To truly succeed, a short story writer needs to pare down the narrative, polishing it until it's like a jewel, with everything pared away that doesn't contribute to one single emotional effect and unified plot line. That's exactly what the author has done here; this yarn is crafted to do just what he wants it to do, as concisely as possible.

Last Minute Replacement eBook Billy Wong Reviews

I was always looking for a story like this in recent times. More than a story these are happening in daily life. Good work.Last Minute Replacement
This was an ok story. Plot was a little slow to start off. Could use for detail when they wrote it. I probably wouldnt advise reading this book unless you enjoy boxing stories.
As the title says, it's a good quick read. Thankfully, the typical "oh the underdog won" ending wasn't there, and it's nice that it shows guys and girls are equal ;) That said, the beginning was a bit confusing at first, since I thought it was a boxing match - turns out it was an MMA competition. It's not life-changing, but there are a lot of bestsellers out there that are worse.
This was certainly a good read. Every sentence seems to be jam packed with action. The narration initially made you expect a standard ending for such boxing stories. But the sudden twist in the story kept you reading, hoping that the underdog would win. The ending of the story was certainly unexpected. However, my only negative comment is that the story isn't entirely believable. There is no way that a woman gets hammered and still able to talk normally.
Last Minute Replacement delivers exactly what it said in the description. The physical combat is well described. What little bit that is revealed about the characters - draw you in - wanting to know more. It was interesting, even though it was short.
I was looking for a book to read on a long flight when I came across Last Minute Replacement by Billy Wong. As a some who grew up watching and reading various martial arts movies, comics and books I was always going to love MA short stories. The author does a very good job in keeping the reader interested till the end with a fast moving plot and interested twists. Good value for money of you are looking for a quick interesting read...
Oh, great idea. A female that fights! Yes! Having a man fight a woman in an open weight competition is different. Love it! I like the dialogue between Leonard and Steph. I enjoyed the fight. I simply want much more detail on the fight itself. Maybe 10-20 more pages of a little background plus a lot of fighting between Leonard and Steph. Otherwise, great short story. I would definitely read more from Billy Wong.
