My mother introduced me to the Deep Valley books. I loved them all, but Emily is probably my favorite. Although her year after high school was not what she had planned, it is thrilling to watch her grow and take charge of her own life.
As I grew up, and began to purchase copies of treasured childhood books to add to my own library, I was shocked to find that Emily of Deep Valley was not available. My sister and I begged my Mom to let us have her copy on a rotational basis, or even just borrow it to reproduce, but to no avail. Rightly so, my mother wanted to keep it so that my nieces could enjoy it when they visited.
So, you can imagine my joy when this went back into print. I have bought myself the hardcover, so I will never be without Emily.
Emily is the perfect book to reread when you are feeling at loose ends, or need to motivate yourself to grow and expand out of a rut.

Emily of Deep Valley Deep Valley Book Maud Hart Lovelace Vera Neville 9780064408585 Books Reviews

One of the things I've grown to love about Maud Hart Lovelace is how realistically she wrote romantic relationships - and the delicacy and sensitivity with which she wrote bad romantic choices. Emily is head-over-heels for a boy who likes to put her down, makes her feel stupid and unworthy, and makes her completely dependent on him. I think every girl meets a guy like this at some point, and many do fall for him. Emily's realization of Don's very bad behavior towards her and her subsequent rejection is a truly empowering moment, unlike some girls in more modern fiction I could name who find similar bad behavior attractive.

While the first half of B~T is absolutely delightful reading, I think fathers and mothers should share the later books with their daughters and have serious discussions about the romantic relationships portrayed in the books. The ultimate romantic triumph for each of the young ladies is marrying men who respect them, rather than men who are merely good-looking or well off or perfect on paper. Besides beautifully portraying the importance of family and healthy friendships, parents should be thrilled that movement towards healthy, mature romantic relationships is also handled so well.
When I found that this book was in print again after all these years, if I didn't jump up and down, it was only because I didn't want to look eccentric. This book was my introduction to Maud Hart Lovelace around 20 years ago, and although I loved reading about Betsy and Tacy, Emily is the character I always identified with most. Shy, intellectual, hindered socially by her dignity and her inability to banter, yet full of fun and lightning-quick in a debate, she went straight to my heart as a character I could relate to and love.
Imagine my delight when, rereading her story after all these years, I find that it has even more to say to me now. Like Emily, I faced a time in my life when I felt cast adrift, as if my plans for my future had stalled; in fact, I imagine almost everyone has felt that way at one time or another. Emily's struggle with her feelings of displacement after graduating from high school and seeing all her friends go off to college makes her very real and touching, and it's wonderfully heartwarming to watch her take control of her life, start to shape her destiny, and gain self-confidence and poise. This seemingly simple tale has so much to tell about making the most of one's life and learning to find the treasures around you--yet it never seems preachy or dry.
This is a book that I'll treasure, as I've treasured the memory of it all these years.
While this book is not necessarily a "Betsy-Tacy" book, it does (IMHO) rank up there with the best of the Lovelace series, especially as it appeals to an adult looking for recreational reading. Not that younger readers (the vast majority of the "B-T Fan club") couldn't enjoy it, but Lovelace tackles some social as well as adult emotional issues in this book that are lacking in the "B-T" books, or are arrived at more blithely, precisely because the characters (Betsy vs Emily) are so vastly different, tempermentally. As a man, I'd say that this book has far less saccharine in it, than the B-T books.

Don't get me wrong! I 'found' these books when my children came of 'reading to' age, and, since we HS, we all enjoyed them immensely. Especially as we live near enough to "Deep Valley," to make a pilgrimage to see where "Betsy and Tacy really lived." That was a field trip I'll long remember, and so will the kids!

What appeals to me in this book, is the female protagonist, and her mix of compassion and strength. She is determined, strong of character, no-nonsense, and yet loving, needing to be loved, and eventually finding love. She (dare I say it?) embodied characteristics of a typical Minnesota woman, and reminded me of both my mother and my wife..which is high praise, in my book! 'Emily of Deep Valley' was one of those moments in life, when a work of literature actually embodies human emotion, causes you to identify, makes you remember your own life lived, and simply, truly moves one.

I am surprised that (as an actor/singer) no one has made a film or concocted a children's musical/opera of any of these books. They embody the best of American humanity [prior to a multicultural age] I have read in a long time. I can say honestly, I will return to visit Emily another spring, to enjoy her story all over again, and will encourage my daughter to do the same, when she becomes a teenager.
This book is great for children and teens. They will learn about life in the early 1900s in a very readable and enjoyable way.
Wonderfully written story of a girl growing up in small town minnisota. Maude is a master story teller along the same line as Montgomery (Anne of green gable). All her "Betsy" books of similar quality. Every once in a while there is a writer with the gift. Enjoy.
