Indemnity Only A V I Warshawski Novel Sara Paretsky 9780440210696 Books

Sara writes intelligent book with such well developed and memorable characters. V.I. is different in this book from the others that I have read. V.I. and Lotty are both showing raw emotions that make you feel for them. Her aunt and her friends mother are displaying such strong mental issues but because of their actions you cannot have much sympathy for them.V.I. is a smart, strong, self reliant women but this story displays her emotional turmoil. A great story that caused a few sleepless nights.

Indemnity Only A V I Warshawski Novel Sara Paretsky 9780440210696 Books Reviews

This was my first time reading a story by this author! This story was amazing, it kept me up all night! I love mysteries that actually keep me guessing until the end! Brilliant writing and wonderful characters. I love the main character V.I. (she don’t take no stuff). I’m ready to read the next in the series! I highly recommend!
I go in spells with the writing of Sara Paretsky. I have followed the V I Warshawski series, a little, by reading the novels in no determinate order. What do I find impossible? Vic has no concept of money, she spends freely and I wonder where her source of money appears. She eats smoked salmon and eats fancy named desserts. Vic is not the average private detective living from case to case. I guess I am used to Janet Evanovich or Laura Lippman's type of female detective. I do appreciate Paretsky's description of Chicago, and the love of the city for the Cubs. But Paretsky misses in the creation of the labor boss and the police department. Still the story is interesting.
I have enjoyed all of the VI Warshawski novels and this one was no different. VI is a relentless soul who comes to her family and friends aid no matter how hopeless the predicament may seem. VI take physical abuse along with her job as a fact of life. She is a good friend and her friends are loyal. I am always surprised that she is not Catholic given her backstory. She is a strong female character but one I would be hard pressed to emulate. The novels are all well written and not transparent about the solution. This is no exception.
I've been reading the VI Warshawski novels for about 25 years, and not in chronological order. It's sometimes nice to see certain themes carry over from novel to novel (Vic's circle of friends); it can also get old (Gabriella's venetian wine glasses--ugh!) This story was convoluted and strained credulity, which sometimes happens. And yet, I keep going back to this series, hoping the Paretsky will rein in her imagination a bit and focus more on the great action sequences and racing around Chicagoland, ducking bad guys.
I read this 30 years ago when I was avidly seeking mysteries written by women because the heroines are capable adults who don’t need to trade sex for anything. I was tired of the depictions of women as bimbos, of depictions of men as a prize—yes, a prize who could be bought by women being silly little girls who love whatever the man gives them. As my dear mother once said to me many years ago when we talked about a certain person being sexy; mom said, "But afterward, you'd have to talk to him." I enjoy reading about characters who have character, and are ethical. I like capable characters. Period. I am grateful for the lessons my parents taught me.
Several weeks ago I was listening to NPR radio and heard part of an interview with Sarah Paretsky. I was surprised to learn that VI Warshowski was a book character. I only knew about the movie. I was intrigued enough to read a few of the reviews and took the advice of one of the reviewers who said to start with one of her earlier books. And so began a wonderful time for me. Sadly, I have just finished the last book. I feel that I am losing a great friend. How I have loved her descriptions of Chicago and of the passage of time from life with no computers or cell phones to today. Thank you for creating such a strong capable, independent woman.
I love Sara Parestskys writing. She builds her story slowly, She obviously has studied the accurate living conditions of her people. She obviously studied the life styles of the Friers and life styles they experience. The Stock Brokers and their dealings with The Market in Chicago and New York, their jealousy towards each other. The misunderstanding of parents whose children choose a different life style.

I like to do a chapter or two before bed but this story kept me up in to to wee hours. I complicated story with lots of details and as usual with 's Paretsky easy to read and hard to put down I 'll Be back with Sara and V.I. again.
The story is great, but the version is horrible... many, many distracting typographical errors, plus places where it seemed as though parts of the text might even be missing. This is an older book; I recognize that. Perhaps the text was scanned into a poor word-recognition program and/or sent to a third-world country to be retyped. However, if is going to charge as much as they do for books like this, a human proofreader should have been employed to check over the text before putting the electronic version on the market. I recommend buying a second-hand paper copy instead.
